Superintendent of Schools – sick leave

On Wednesday April 2nd 2014, the Maryland Senate gave final passage to legislation that would prohibit the Anne Arundel County Board of Education from compensating a superintendent for unused sick leave earned while he or she is employed by any county other than Anne Arundel.

The Senate voted 47-0 to pass House Bill 87, an Anne Arundel County delegation bill that was originally led by Del. Herb McMillan, R-Annapolis. The bill passed the House in March by a 137-0 vote. (See history of the bill below)

The legislation would allow the superintendent to use the sick leave in the same manner as sick leave accrued while employed by the county.

It was designed to put the county schools’ superintendent on the same level as county teachers when it comes to what they’re able to do with sick leave.

The idea was introduced to the county House delegation in February. Local lawmakers continually cited what happened when former superintendent Kevin M. Maxwell departed to become the head of Prince George’s County schools. Maxwell took with him more than $90,000 for unused annual leave and sick leave, raising eyebrows among education experts and union officials. >>> Read more Delegation hears bills to limit leave payout for new superintendent
