Post Community Media announced June 12 that The Gazette newspapers in Montgomery and Prince George’s counties will publish their final editions June 17 and June 18, respectively.
The Gazette, which is part of Post Community Media LLC, has served Maryland communities for more than 55 years.
“We have made a sincere and earnest effort to keep our free two community newspapers financially viable. However, as we’ve seen across the country with suburban newspapers that border markets with strong major market papers, even extensive expense reductions and the development of new products are not enough to offset declining advertising revenue for individual papers,” stated an emailed announcement sent to PCM employees.
Other PCM properties are being purchased. The Adams Publishing Group (APG Media) will acquire the Southern Maryland Newspapers and PCM military publications. Whip It Media will purchase Fairfax County Times in Virginia.
It’s sad they are closing. The fewer media outlets there are, the less scrutiny local governments and school districts receive especially when corruption is at all time high within the counties. They will be missed.
