Just two weeks before she was arrested in the fatal stabbing of a lawyer at a hotel in downtown Washington, Jamyra Gallmon told a good friend that she was not the woman whose face had been captured on a hotel surveillance camera around the time of the killing, the friend said Thursday.

“I literally asked her, I said, ‘Jamyra, you look like that lady in the camera,’ ” the friend said in a telephone interview. “She said, ‘Girl, no, that’s not me. I’m trying to go into the Army.’ ”

As Gallmon, 21, awaited her first court appearance Thursday in the February slaying of 30-year-old intellectual property lawyer David Messerschmitt, friends and former classmates at Forestville Military Academy said the former high school basketball player and aspiring soldier’s arrest made an already mysterious case even more confounding. Gallmon, they said, was a caring, reliable person who never seemed to be in trouble.

Brandi Gordon — who asked Gallmon in March whether she was the woman in the surveillance images being shown on TV — said she doubted that her friend killed anyone. She said Gallmon was a goofy person but a reliable friend, and “if you ever needed her, anything, she’s there.”
